How to make a car insurance claim

  1. Contact the police. They will advise you to either stay at the scene until an officer arrives or to meet an officer at your preferred collision centre.

    TIP: We recommend that you do not discuss the accident with anyone but the police prior to contacting us. Don’t sign anything, discuss liability, or accept fault with others involved or with witnesses.

  2. Keep a copy of the police accident report for your records.

  3. Document the details of the accident: information about damage sustained to all involved vehicles, weather and road conditions, and photos at the scene (if possible).

  4. Exchange information — names, addresses, telephone numbers, insurance company names and policy numbers — with everyone involved, including any passengers or witnesses. If necessary, get the licence plate number of anyone who won’t co-operate.

  5. Contact our 24-hour emergency line to report your claim: 1‑800‑607‑2424 or 1‑888‑875‑8088 (Quebec).

    When an accident in Quebec involves two or more vehicles and no injures, a joint report should be submitted with your claim.

    TIP: Be prepared and order a blank copy of the Joint Report from infoinsurance.ca to keep in your glove box and it’ll be there when you need it.

  6. If repairs are required, and with your permission, we’ll then contact one of our approved repair facilities in your area so they can get started right away — no appraisals or estimates required.

    If you'd like to use your own repair facility, we'll provide them with your coverage information and answer any questions they may have. A claims representative will then complete an assessment of the damage, which you can take to your preferred shop.

  7. If repairs are not an option or your stolen vehicle cannot be recovered, one of our claims representatives will help you in processing your claim for a cash settlement.

  8. If you require a rental vehicle, we will help make the arrangements for you.
